Ice Box 8112′ / Box Creek Basin, Glacier Peak Wilderness, WA.
Ice Box is an 8k’ peak on Entiat Ridge located in Central Washington’s Glacier Peak Wilderness that draws the attention of peakbagger’s who just have to get to the summit for varying reasons, mine being the journey through pine forest, sub-alpine meadows, and eventually to alpine peaks with exceptional views, while I am definitely not a “lister” the journey and destination are more my motivation with the caveat that I am particular about having sunny weather, wildflowers, colorful vegetation and terrain I do not to go at all cost. This trip was shared with my two main backpacking partners Steve and Lloyd and we began the trip following the Carne Mountain trail not far up from the Phelps Creek TH through Carne Mountain Basin where we refilled our water and took a break before heading up to Carne through the Pass continuing on the Carne Mountain High Route to Box Creek Basin which has some established campsites and 4 season water supply. We setup our tents / shelters (Altaplex for me), filtered 4-5 liters of water for current and future use then followed a broad gully with wildflowers up to a high rock basin with a creek beside it, the basin still had snow melting in August, from there it was a boulder, talus, and scree ascent to a pumice saddle then up to the summit which had more bugs on it than I had seen all year. From the summit we had a snack, hydrated, and took too many pictures before heading back down. Great summit and trip.
